Anthology: Invisible Planets

Invisible Planets is the first anthology of contemporary short-form Chinese SF I translated and edited (published November 1, 2016). As far as I know, it’s also the first English-language anthology from a major commercial publisher specializing in Chinese SF written in the 21st century. The book was a Locus Award Finalist in the Anthology category.

The anthology includes stories by writers already familiar to anglophone readers like Liu Cixin (author of the Hugo-winning Three-Body Problem) as well as newer writers beloved by fans in China like Chen Qiufan, Ma Boyong, Xia Jia, Hao Jingfang (author of the Hugo-winning “Folding Beijing”), Cheng Jingbo, and Tang Fei. To place the works in context, I’ve written an introduction as well as solicited a few analytical essays.

Invisible Planets cover

This vibrant collection of short stories runs the gamut from hard fantasy to ethereal science fiction. Besides stories like the Hugo award-winning “Folding Beijing,” these are tales rich with lush language, inventive premises, and heart-breaking story-telling.

    — Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo-winning author of Ghost Talkers

A phenomenal anthology of short speculative fiction.

    Kirkus Reviews (a starred review)

This stellar anthology of 13 stories selected and translated by Liu (the Dandelion Dynasty series) brings the best of Chinese science fiction to anglophones.

    Publishers Weekly (a starred review)

It tackles its problem with intelligence, and in its diverse and often inspired selections, it makes the implicit point that the rapid growth of Chinese sci-fi in recent decades have made it both difficult to define and a microcosm of the various things that speculative fiction can be.
