While experimenting with Google Books, I found the following gem in the April 1, 1946 issue of Life.

Sanforized 1

Sanforized 2

Shocking, aren’t they? “Hm-m-m, putting on a little weight?” They rather grate on our modern sensibilities.

It took me a while before I understood what the ad was about. “Sanforized” is a mechanical process that pre-shrinks clothes so that they don’t shrink when you put them through the wash. The ads present “humorous” vignettes in which shrinking clothes, or the fear of them, puts the wearer in embarrassing situations.

Definitely take a peek at the Sanforized web site. The diagram of how a sanforization machine works looks like it came out of the Incredible Machine.

Now I’m going to die understanding what sanforization is. My life is complete.
